Nothing like a musical instrument than can scald you if played incorrectly! Just came across this video (I believe shot by the multi-talented Michael Galinsky) of a steam powered organ. The caption says, "Every year on New Year's Eve Pratt breaks out the steam organ and creates a cacophony for the community. This year on Dec 11th they broke it out of storage to work out the kinks. Kids were just getting out of Saturday Art classes and went nuts in the steam". Hot (pun fully intended)!

Sheb Wooley has found his way into your head many many ways over the period of his life and beyond it.

Wooley appeared in dozens of western films and in western TV shows in the 1950s through the 1970s, most notably High Noon, The Adventures of Kit Carson, The Cisco Kid, and Rawhide.

He taught his 2nd cousin Roger Miller to play guitar chords, and purchasing him a fiddle.

He wrote the theme song for the long-running television show Hee Haw.

He was a regular on Hee Haw and The Muppet Show as the drunken country songwriter Ben Colder. He released music and performed as Ben Colder as well as under his own name.

His most famous act was his penning and recording of the novelty sound "Purple People Eater".

And perhaps even more burned into our pop culture is Wooley's scream. He was used as a voice actor for the Wilhelm Scream, a scream that ended up in the popular Warner Brothers stock sound library for TV and film and has been used by sound effects teams in countless TV and video games as well as over 149 films including Star Wars and all of the Indiana Jones films. Over the years it has gained a cult following among movie and horror fans.

We salute you Sheb on what would have been your 90th birthday this week!

Ah, the Germans and their love of fine food, fine music, and precision mechanics. I don't know the story behind this video put it seems it was produced by an antisocial composer with a William Sonoma charge card who decided to build their own mechanical orchestra. Sure, it costs more up front but think of all the drink tickets and hotel rooms that person won't have to share.

I do wish the music was a bit more captivating. It would be great if the maker lends it out to different composers that would take the idea and the capabilities a bit further and to more interesting places like those amazing LEMUR folks in NYC.. Until then, here it is.

Don Kirshner, the veteran music mogul who shepherded songs from a monstrously talented stable of young writers to the top of the pop charts in the 1960s, launched the career of the Monkees and then became a familiar face to millions of rock fans as impresario of his late-night music TV series in the 1970s, died Monday of heart failure in Boca Raton, Fla., where he had lived for the last decade, a family spokeswoman said Tuesday. He was 76.

In the early days of our families betamax lifestyle, my brother would record lots of late night TV for he and I to watch. As a little kid in elementary school, I got to see SNL, Second City TV, the Kenny Everett Video Show, and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert. These were my first exposure to tons of great music and bands I otherwise would not have known about like T Rex, the Clash, Devo, and of course the list goes on and on. I know I still have that old betamax here somewhere... and probably all those old tapes too.

Today we celebrate Pattie Santos' (of the great San Francisco band It's A Beautiful Day) birthday. Today would have been her 61st birthday if she had not been killed in a car accident in 1989. Though It's a Beautiful Day is commonly grouped with such bands as the Grateful Dead and the Jefferson Airplane due to their time and location and management, their best work (their catalog can be spotty) feels more akin to the likes of Scott Walker and Roxy Music and were perhaps even an inspiration to such bands as later fellow Californian's X.

Thor Harris is not forgettable. His trademark long blonde mane and solid drumming are the first things you notice. He is also a very smart, funny, and straight shooting guy. There was a time where the Lounge Ax rock club in Chicago was booking about 12 bands a week with more than half being bands from Austin Texas.... and it seemed of those, half had Thor as a drummer. He has played drums with the Swans, Smog (Bill Callahan), Devendra Banhart, Gretchen Phillips (of Two Nice Girls fame), Lisa Germano, and the list goes on. Recently Thor sat down and shared some of his wisdom that he has gained from the road... wisdom that yes, is touring band specific but really, isn't touring just a microcosm of life?

Happy birthday to RAYMOND SCOTT, the composer, band leader, electronics pioneer, hero, and all around great inspiration!

Composer, bandleader and inventor Raymond Scott was among the unheralded pioneers of contemporary experimental music.

Of all of Scott's accomplishments of 1949, however, none was more important than the Electronium, one of the first synthesizers ever created. An "instantaneous composing machine," the Electronium generated original music via random sequences of tones, rhythms, and timbres; Scott himself denied it was a prototype synthesizer — it had no keyboard — but as one of the first machines to create music by means of artificial intelligence, its importance in pointing the way towards the electonic compositions of the future is undeniable. His other inventions included the "Karloff," an early sampler capable of recreating sounds ranging from sizzling steaks to jungle drums; the Clavinox, a keyboard Theremin complete with an electronic sub-assembly designed by a then 23-year-old Robert Moog; and the Videola, which fused together a keyboard and a TV screen to aid in composing music for films and other moving images.

By the middle of the 1960s, Scott began turning increasingly away from recording and performing to focus on writing and inventing; a 1969 musical celebrating the centennial of Kentucky Bourbon was his last orchestral work, with his remaining years spent solely on electronic composition. Among his latter-day innovations was an early programmable polyphonic sequencer, which along with the Electronium later caught the attention of Motown chief Berry Gordy Jr., who in 1971 tapped Scott to head the label's electronic music research and development team. After retiring six years later, he continued writing — his last known piece, 1986's "Beautiful Little Butterfly," was created on MIDI technology.

I've been a fan of Sam Prekop for over two decades now.... His band Shrimp Boat put out the the most fun and shambly tapes in the late 80's... one of the reasons my friends and I moved to Chicago. We couldn't get enough of Shrimp Boat... then they borrowed Archer Prewitt from our band to make the Sea And Cake... Sam has released two full length records under his own name, both with great bands helping him out and both sounding somewhat like a down tempo and jazzier versions of TSAC. This new record entitled "Old Punch Card" (Thrill Jockey) will be his third and takes a big left turn into dusty and foggy modular synth bleeps and bloops. He sites Raymond Scott's electronic work which is a good reference as would be the Ursula Bogner CD that came out a few years ago as well as early electronic pioneers like BBC Radiophonic Workshop and Oskar Sala.

Beck does these things were he invites different bands and artists to come in to his studio and he collaborates with them to recreate or de-create some 'seminal' record for his free downloadable record club. I will state for the record I am not a Beck fan. My dislike for him has been tested many times over the years but dislike, as cement and arteries do, has set and strengthened with time. That said, he has had some pretty interesting ideas and collaborations for his record club. Not all but some. Well, this month he has Tortoise and they are riffing on some Yanni record. Now I'll let you guess which part about this equation I like the least... go ahead. I'll give you three guesses..... You won't guess it. Ok, ok... I'll tell you. ALL OF IT. The Yanni thing... come on. Beck and his sidemen scratching and rustling things into microphones... poop. Just let Tortoise be Tortoise! They are so freaking good at it! In my opinion, they get better at it and better at it. Yes, good for them for stepping out of their comfort zone and trying something like this... but a lot of the time, stepping out of their comfort zone IS their thing. I would just rather have watched Tortoise do their thing without Beck and his merry jokesters forcing them into some ill-fitting square hole. My two cents.

For those of you who lived in Chicago in the 70's and 80's, this needs no explanation. For the rest of you, this is one of the huge Magikist signs from the Chicago company that were seen on their building on south Cicero but more visible was the one overlooking the 90/94 highway. It was your "welcome to Chicago from the northern suburbs" sign. It's how you knew it wasn't too far now to go to be downtown. This was as familiar to Chicagoans as the Sears Tower and Wrigley Field... and was DECADES before we even knew what a 'cloudgate' was. I would love to buy this baby, reinstall the neon, and return it to it's perch up above the highway.

Oh, Fred Schneider... what an enigma you are. I hope you have a very happy birthday... your 59th I believe.

After years of hits and misses with his B-52's (Rock Lobster, Planet Claire, Love Shack), Fred stepped out on his own with his first solo record in 1984. In 1996, he entered the studio with Steve Albini (Big Black, Rapeman, Shellac) to record his second solo record. Albini pulled together different folks from his punk rock circle to make up backing bands for this new Fred record including members of Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet, Tar, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Didjits, and Six Finger Satellite. Could this have been a disaster? Well, it should have been, right?! Somehow it turned out great! I don't know how and I don't want to look at it too closely for fear it will collapse like a house of cards...

Mayfair composer Chris Fuller toured with Fred for that record. Ask him about it. I'm sure he has a boatload of stories as big as a whale!

Creating music from scratch is a blast, for sure... but foley sound is where it's at! I've done some of this type of work, mostly for actions of the crazy Adult Swim games I made sound design and music for. Happy birthday to Johnny Farina of Santo & Johnny who is 69 today!

Though most famous for their melodic steel guitar line on their hit "Sleep Walk", as well as on their somewhat sound-alike follow-ups, these two brothers created a stunning body of work. They later went on to add their voice to easy listening style instrumental renditions of popular songs of the day including a whole LP of Beatles covers, popular soundtrack songs of the day, old standards a la Stu Phillips and the Hollywood Strings but on a smaller, more intimate and often melancholic bummed out way. Johnny and Santo both still play though they have each stepped out on their own.

Happy birthday to Gary Numan who is 52 today. His Tubway Army records scared the crap out of me when I got them in 6th grade. I started out with the 7" picture disc of "We Are So Fragile" b/w "Are Friends Electric". The pictures on the disc were of a very alien looking Numan on one side and a close-up of his eyeball with a horizontal line for a pupil on the other. Totally freaked me out. I miss being freaked out by music and bands. In hindsight I really understand the draw of kids to bands like Kiss and Gwar and hardcore and speed metal bands and people like GG Allen... where there is a sense of danger (even if it was just a sense)... That was a rush much like that of riding a rollercoaster... not positive you were going to make it back. But now I know too much. Luckily, artists like Gary Numan brought the goods in addition to acting and looking weird. All three Tubeway Army records (including The Plan which was made up of the guitar based demos Numan used to get signed to Beggars Banquet) remains some of my most favorite records to this day and I do not recall ever not loving them.

INTERESTING FACTS: Gary Numan had a mild form of Asperger's Syndrome that went undiagnosed until he was in his forties. His uncle played drums on the Tubeway Army recordings. Numan married a member of his own fan club.

Lou Reed is 68 today! Happy birthday Lou!

In 1963, way before he created his Velvet Underground, Lou (Lewis) Reed began working as an in-house songwriter for Pickwick Records, a record label and distributor known for its releases of sound-alike recordings and bargain bin reissues. In 1964, he scored a minor hit with the single "The Ostrich", a parodic novelty song of popular "dance songs" such as "The Twist" that included lines such as "put your head on the floor and have somebody step on it." His employers had felt the song had hit potential, and arranged for a band to be assembled around Reed to promote the recording. The ad hoc group, called The Primitives, included Welsh musician John Cale, who had recently moved to New York to study music and was playing viola in composer La Monte Young's Theater of Eternal Music along with Tony Conrad. Many of these tracks are available on bootlegs and compilations, and luckily some have been posted on YouTube for our enjoyment.

INTERACTIVE MUSEUM OF THE DAY! 2-26-10

The Moogseum is exactly what it sounds like it is... a museum celebrating, educating, and archiving all things Moog. The Moog synthesizer was one of the first widely used electronic musical instruments and was created by legendary inventor Robert Moog. Moog started his company in the early 50's as a theremin kit supplier and, after doing some collaboration with composer/inventor Raymond Scott, started working toward his modular synthesizers.

Thru Moog and later his Big Brior company, Moog continued pushing the envelope (and envelope filters...) of what was not only possible with oscillators and synthesized sounds, but also set very high standards with the instruments that he built to do such things. These were musical instruments for use for artisits and musicians, not just scientific oddities. Robert Moog passed away in 2005.

One fun thing the folks at the Moogseum are doing is recording live shows at the Moog Factory with artists using Moog instruments. The Yo La Tengo one is super nice (of course).... I'm hoping there are more to come.

The Moogseum has an online counterpart that seems to be coming together as does its physical version in Ashville, NC near the Moog Factory. Time to load up the mini-van (or "mini-moog-van" perhaps?) and head out for a road trip!

I just found this great video on YouTube of Gilberto Serna of Century Mallets here in Chicago. Gilberto has fixed and serviced my vibraphone and marimbas many many times over the years and visits to his shop are as fun as breaking the instruments in the first place. He worked for J. C. Deagan Company (one of the most respected makers of vibraphones, xylophone, and many many other mallet instruments) up until they were bought out by Yamaha in the 80's. His place is loaded down with mallet instruments of literally every shape and size... forms you NEVER knew existed.... early electronic versions run off of primitive car batteries... ones made over a hundred years ago... He is THE guy to service mallet instruments in the western hemisphere. Yes, he is that well know in those circles. He is like the Mohammed Ali of mallet instruments.

The first time I brought him my vibes for a fixing, I stayed to watch him work a bit. It was like stepping back 100 years when you enter his shop and there was almost too much to see. As he looked my vibraphone over he said to me " You know, these were made here". I said "Yeah, they were made in Chicago. Deagan was from Chicago, right?" He turns to me and said "no, no... I mean they were made right here in THIS ROOM in 1920." Crazy! It was true. Gilberto took over Deagan's Chicago headquarters for his workshop and showroom where he remains today . The "Deagan" logo still graces the clock tower on top of the building.

SINGING SISTERS OF THE DAY! 2-9-10

The Emotions were a sweet soul singing group from Chicago comprised of sisters Sheila, Jeannette, and Wanda Hutchinson. They released a few small, local singles including the burning hot "I Can't Stand No More Heartaches" and gained many admirers and later collaborators but it was their connection to Pervis Staples of the Staple Singers that landed them on the Stax/Voltz label for their debut record "So I can Love You" released in 1969. Pervis took over management for the band as well. They hit paydirt on both the R&B and pop charts with hits like "Best Of My Love" and "Don't Ask My Neighbors" but perhaps their biggest success was as part of Earth Wind & Fires mega hit "Boogie Wonderland" which featured the Emotions. Over the years the lineup has changed and sisters were replaced by younger sisters or cousins or good friends. They still play today though their last studio record was released back in the 80's.

HONEYBUS was an English band ('67-'73) that never hit much wide notoriety beyond their UK hit "I Can't Let Maggie Go" (which was later used to sell bread on UK TV). My friends Steve and Joey were listening to them the other day and played me some of the band's lesser known gems. So good! They fit somewhere between Rubber Soul/Revolver era Beatles and the Bee Gee's circa Cucumber Castle with Big Starish drumming. Great great stuff!

Johnny Guitar Watson, the original Gangster of Love, would have been 75 years old today. From his early raw, out of control guitar playing style to his sweet blues ballads to his funkier disco-ier 70's records, Johnny had many worthy landing points in his career and inspired tons and tons of guitarists from Hendrix to Zappa to the Vaughan brothers. He died on stage in the middle of a show in Japan in 1996... it's said his last words were "Ain't that a bitch!".

I know I know... you must listen and look past the Pat Metheny part of this video... I'm not a fan of his playing or his writing or, really, his hairdo.. seems like a nice enough guy though, I guess. Anyway, it's what he is playing WITH that is mind blowing. Now people have made Orchestrions before... beyond the actual ones from back in the day (you can still see great old turn of the century ones at Musee Mechanique in San Francisco and at Wall Drug too)... but I mean there are those that have created ones to play live music along with. This though is a whole bunch of triggered instruments actually 'listening' to his playing and reacting accordingly. Wha?!! That's amazing! Looks like he had help from the Lemur folks who are amazing on their own.

The Auerglass is a two-person, mechanical-action organ. The instrument requires two people to create music and cannot be played alone. This marriage of interdependency and cooperation is achieved as one player pumps the bellows while the other creates music and vice versa.

The two keyboards cover a four-octave range and have been divided so that each of the two players has every other note at their disposal. Auerbach and Mesirow (of the band Glasser), will play a composition written specifically for the instrument. It combines music that Auerbach wrote as a child, songs from Glasser, and new material.

The Marr Sound Archives is located on the ground floor of the Miller Nichols Library on the campus of the University of Missouri--Kansas City. The archives was established in 1987 with a foundation gift from Olga and Gaylord Marr. Since then, the collection has grown to include over 300,000 sound recordings.

The focus of the collection is the American experience as reflected in recorded sound. The archives’ holdings include jazz, blues, country, bluegrass, spoken word, vintage radio programs popular, rock and roll, soul, opera, classical and numerous other genres of music. Researchers internationally benefit from the archives collections and services.

The Raymond Scott Collection was donated to the University of Missouri-Kansas City by Mitzi Scott, Raymond's widow, in 1993. It contains music scores, photographs, correspondence, journals, diaries, scrapbooks, notebooks, schematics, news clippings, production notes, and personal and miscellaneous items. The collection, which encompasses much of Scott's career until 1980, has been organized into 11 series that occupy 28 boxes and an oversized drawer. A 12th series of audio material, primarily open-reel tapes and instantaneous-cut discs, is housed in the Marr Sound Archives, the audio division of Special Collections.

The strength of the collection lies in over 400 manuscript scores by Scott. They are in various stages of development including sketches, fragments and completed scores, which provide opportunities to see the progress of a work from a rough copy to a completed, published score. This is especially true with The Lute Song manuscripts.

The collection also gives insight into the other side of Scott's career - that of inventor and electronic music pioneer. There are 20 spirals and 36 disclosures to indexed inventions. Additionally, there are miscellaneous invention and engineering notes, and schematic drawings and diagrams.

Other items of interest include journals, diaries and scrapbooks of Raymond Scott and his second wife, Dorothy Collins; personal and business correspondence; and several hundred photographs, including publicity and candid shots.

TINY GRIMES!
This week I was chatting with a friend who was telling me about a great 40's swing/jump guitar player named Tiny Grimes who made his name playing the tenor guitar. I have been drawn more and more to the tenor guitar over the past year or two due to having my baritone uke as my 'go-to' instrument in most cases for both composing and just messing around. Anyway, Tiny's description reminded me of the 30's-40's band Cats and the Fiddle (video clip of 'Killin' Jive' posted in an earlier post). My friend had not heard of them but we each mentioned checking out each other's recommendations. So, of course, as things go.... Tiny was actually IN Cats and the Fiddle.... later than the when the clip was shot by a few years... but still. It was a fun coincidence.

He played the tenor guitar (a four string version of a guitar) and played with countless artists on as many recordings by the likes of Art Tatum, Charlie Parker, Coleman Hawkins, and even Billie Holiday. One of his own bands, Tiny Grimes and the Rockin' Highlanders included a young Screaming Jay Hawkins years before he made a name for himself.

Though he was known as being a master of swing, jump, and jazz in the style of Charlie Christian, Tiny is also one of the many artists thought to have written and performed the very first rock and roll song, his 1946 "Tiny's Boogie". Other artists thought to have also written the very first rock and roll song are Big Joe Turner, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Ike Turner, Fats Domino.... and the list goes on and on.

Happy new year with the New Year! (yeah, old video of good band but you know... I had to post it for the pun... always up for the pun...)

The New Year were (are?) a nice band that rose from the ashes of Bedhead (the Kadane brothers) and has over the years had members from Come (Chris Brokaw on drums), Three On A Hill (Peter Schmidt on bass), the End (or End Over End) (Tench Coxe no longer part of the band at this point). Yea for late 80's Dallas bands!

I think his video puts to rest any questions one might have about the loyalty this band has to Fender products.

Today is the birthday of Beach Boy Dennis Wilson who would have been 65 this year if not for his accidental drowning in 1983. Here is his beautiful "Barbara" recorded in 1971 but not released until after his death on the Beach Boys' rarities collection Endless Harmony. It's been said that this recording was unfinished; that one of the two piano parts was a guide track for strings to be later added.

I saw the Chicago band Spires That in the Sunset Rise by accident and was totally blindsided by their set. I was awestruck. This all woman four piece can find common ground with some of the neo psych-folk movement while also sounding often very Eastern in their melodies and instrumentation. Their use of voice-as-instrument with more often non-lyrical approach also helps to keep their music out of obvious Western forms. Most of what they play are acoustic stringed instruments like banjo and table harps and zithers. Their arrangements are loose and sometimes frail giving a tenseness to their set. Please see them if you can and buy their records.

Happy Birthday to Donald Duck Dunn, one of the very best of the best bass players ever. He of course played with the Mar-Keys and Booker T and the MG's who were the house band at Memphis' Stax Records. They backed records by Sam & Dave, Albert King, Wilson Picket, Staple Singers, Freddie King, Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding, and really almost every single song released on Stax.. A third of the basslines in your head belong to him.

On this day in 1994, Cab Calloway passed away at the age of 86.

Here is a great old Fleischer Brothers animation of their character Koko the Clown singing to Calloway's "St. James Infirmary" to the deceased Betty Boop. Check out this amazing surreal interpretation... added to by their use of the Fleischer's own invention... the Rotoscope which is an animation technique in which animators trace over live-action film movement, frame by frame. All hail Joe Maphis, one of the great early country lighting hot shredders.... He played with everyone from Merle Travis to Wanda Jackson to Johnny Burnette to Ricky Nelson. He was known for his double necked Mosrite guitar and in fact helped launch Mosrite as a national production line guitar maker with his high visibility TV appearances.

I've been occupied recently with all the great animation of Norman McLaren who created a large body of work from the mid 30's up thru the 80's.. Great stuff.

Here is a film short showing McLaren creating his own soundtrack. He created it himself by drawing and scratching into the edge of the film where the optical soundtrack is found.. Wow! Amazing! It is very Raymond Scott sounding.... and actually a lot like some of the other soundtracks for McLaren's films by composer Maurice Blackburn who also employed that way of music making.

Saw this clip of the Cats and the Fiddle recently... I think on a PBS program about latin music called Latin Music USA.... can't remember. Well, anyway, hot clip! Man, you can't beat the line up! Tenor guitar, tiple, standup bass, and baritone uke!! So great! They played from the late '30's up thru the '50's.... almost twenty years on almost as many labels. I believe this clip was from a cameo they had in the 1938 Lena Horne film ""The Duke Is Tops" (later retitled "The Bronze Venus").

I'll admit it, I am not a huge fan of circuit bending in general. Like a lot of free jazz, I see how it can be very fun TO DO, but most of the time it is a DRAG to hear someone else do it. Also, it most often ends up sounding like a cross between an out of control R2D2 and a turd. That said, this fellow at NoysToise Blog does an amazing job of repurposing old plastic keyboard bodies, discarded Speak and Spells, form fitted tool carrying cases, and snooze control clock radios into very beautifully constructed, new forms of musical oddities. This one especially caught my attention with its great aesthetic form and details and its actual musical uses... it's not just a sputtering out of control audio crap sprayer.

Ah, the tiple! Same size and shape as the baritone ukulele but with ten strings instead of four (although this guy has strung it with only four)... two sets of three and two sets of two. Look at this beauty with the mother of pearl and all the details! I became aware of this instrument when I saw my friend Ian's beautifully made solid body version he created at his Specimen Products. This one was also made in Chicago and actually not too far from Ian's shop. It was created by Regal Musical Instrument Company, makers of mostly resonator instrument parts for both Dobro and National in addition to their own line of fretted instruments. They were based in Chicago from 1908 lasting until somewhere into the '60's. The building on Grand Ave near Kedzie still sports a faded painted Regal logo on its side. BUY IT NOW!!!

How cute! Someone has taken some their time and skill to imbed a tube amplifier into an old suitcase. It looks like a natural fit, too. It's probably a little 10 or 15 watt amp good for harp or low volume distorted guitar... and it's ready to use easily and then quickly unplug and move on when the show is over... probably best suited for living room gigs... and probably not suited for checking thru at an airport.

Here is the very lovely and sweet-voiced St. Vincent (Annie Clark) with her version of the this wonderful song from Nico's "Chelsea Girls" LP, her debut solo record released the year after she had left the Velvet Underground (though Lou, Sterling, and John play on this record too). "These Days" was written by the young Jackson Browne who also plays on the record.

Sad news....Blue Cheer Frontman Dickie Peterson Passed away on Monday, Oct 12, 2009.

FROM NEWS ARTICLE: Dickie Peterson, the singer and bass player of Blue Cheer, who are considered another one of the first heavy metal bands, sadly passed away this morning in Germany at the age of sixty one. The cause of death has yet to be announced but he had been ill for some time."

They were just in Chicago last year on a reunion tour. I am sad I missed that show. Their records along with the Stooges records scared me as a young kid in the same way punk rock bands like Rapeman and the Butthole Surfers scared me as a young man. I miss being scared by rock bands.

Here we have a great old clip from guitar innovator Vincent "Vinnie" Bell who is playing Coral's version of the electric sitar that he helped design. (One of the very best uses of this instrument in my opinion was on the recordings by Philly soul group the Delfonics... now that is some BURNING use of the electric sitar!)

Bell was famous for his acid-y guitar/sitar work on the theme to the 1970 movie "Airport", his watery, wanting guitar line in Ferrante & Teicher's version of the theme to "Midnight Cowboy", his opening guitar riff on the Monkees' "I'm a Believer", the signature sitar line on "Green Tambourine" by the Lemon Pipers, as well as the distinctive percussive guitar work on Dionne Warwick's "Walk On By". Some also give him credit for creating one of the first versions of the wah-wah pedal in the 50's years before Thomas Organ released their first mass-produced version. Also, the Danelectro Bellzouki (12 stringed guitar) was their electrified version of a bouzouki (a old Greek and middle eastern stringed instrument) and was named in Bell's honor.

It's shocking that he has been gone for 29 years... and also that I am now one year older than he was when he was shot.
